BALTIMORE, MD — The Social Security Administration is launching a new process that will allow parents to enroll newborns automatically in Trump Accounts, expanding access to a federally backed savings program created under last year’s tax legislation.
The initiative integrates Trump Account enrollment into the agency’s Enumeration at Birth program, which enables parents to apply for a Social Security number for their child through hospitals shortly after birth.
“Trump Accounts represent one of the most significant investments in the next generation of Americans in our nation’s history, providing American children with a strong financial footing for the future,” Social Security Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said in a statement.
The Trump Accounts program was established under the Working Families Tax Cuts law signed by President Donald Trump on July 4, 2025. The accounts are available to eligible minors under age 18 and are designed to provide long-term savings opportunities beginning at birth.
Starting this week, the Social Security Administration said it will update guidance provided to hospitals and work with states to revise existing birth registration forms to include the option for automatic creation of a Trump Account.
The agency also plans to include information about the accounts in Social Security card mailings for newborns and update its websites and publications to explain enrollment procedures.
Eligible children born between Jan. 1, 2025, and Dec. 31, 2028, can receive a one-time $1,000 contribution from the U.S. Treasury if they are U.S. citizens with valid Social Security numbers.
According to the Social Security Administration, approximately 6 million children have been enrolled in Trump Accounts to date.
The agency said eligible account holders will begin receiving the government’s initial $1,000 contributions on July 4, 2026.
Parents can also establish accounts for children who already have valid Social Security numbers until they reach age 18. Additional information and enrollment details are available at TrumpAccounts.gov, where parents can create an account by submitting IRS Form 4547.
The new enrollment process marks a broader federal effort to increase participation in the savings program by linking account creation to existing government systems used by nearly all newborns in the United States.
