WASHINGTON, D.C. — More than $1.1 billion in federal funding will support affordable housing development and services in nearly 600 Tribal communities across the country.
What This Means for You
- Federal funds will support housing projects in Tribal communities nationwide
- Money can be used for construction, repairs, and housing services
- Program marks 30 years of federal investment in Tribal housing
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced the funding through its Indian Housing Block Grant program, which provides formula-based grants to American Indian Tribes, Alaska Native Villages, and Tribally Designated Housing Entities.
A formula grant distributes funding based on factors such as population and housing need, rather than through a competitive application process.
How the Funding Can Be Used
The grants support a range of housing-related activities, including building new homes, maintaining and modernizing existing housing, and providing services to eligible families.
Funds may also be used for safety improvements, crime prevention, and other community-based housing initiatives.
“HUD is fully committed to empowering and uplifting Tribal communities by ensuring they have the tools necessary to build successful, high-quality, affordable housing,” said HUD Secretary Scott Turner.
Long-Term Impact of the Program
The funding comes as the Indian Housing Block Grant program marks 30 years under the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act, the federal law that established the program.
Since its passage, the law has supported the construction, acquisition, or rehabilitation of more than 160,000 homes in Tribal communities.
