WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County health inspectors identified improper food temperatures, spoiled products, food-storage violations and sanitation problems at three establishments during inspections Wednesday, October 28, requiring corrective measures to address potential food safety risks.
The Chester County Health Department documented violations at Coventry Parlor in Pottstown, Waynesborough Country Club in Paoli and Country Bagel Bakery in West Chester. Several violations were corrected during the inspections, including the disposal of improperly stored food.
Coventry Parlor LLC — Pottstown
At Coventry Parlor, 653 Laurelwood Road, inspectors found sliced meats, cheeses and tuna salad held between 55 and 61 degrees Fahrenheit, above the required maximum of 41 degrees.
The affected foods were discarded within four hours of removal from refrigeration. Inspectors also observed pasta cooling at room temperature, although its measured temperature of 69 degrees after 90 minutes remained within the permitted initial cooling period. Staff moved the pasta into refrigeration.
Additional violations included honey mustard prepared October 16 that exceeded the seven-day storage limit, missing allergen information on packaged foods, and the absence of a consumer advisory for eggs served raw or undercooked.
Inspectors directed the establishment to correct labeling deficiencies, including missing milk and wheat allergen disclosures on certain packaged products.
The facility also lacked required written procedures for using time rather than temperature to control the safety of butter, squash and potatoes.
Other findings involved unlabeled chemical containers, cleaning deficiencies, a leaking mop sink faucet and gaps around exterior doors that could permit pest entry.
Waynesborough Country Club — Paoli
At Waynesborough Country Club, 440 Darby Paoli Road, inspectors documented violations across multiple kitchens, bars and other food-service areas.
In the upstairs main kitchen, inspectors found moldy cream cheese stored past its expiration date and thick-cut bacon held above the required 41-degree cold-storage limit. Both products were discarded during the inspection.
In the downstairs main kitchen, partially cooked roast beef was stored directly on top of raw beef, creating a potential cross-contamination risk. The partially cooked meat was discarded.
Inspectors also identified improperly handled reduced-oxygen-packaged fish, three dented food cans, expired Bang Bang sauce and uncovered food in refrigeration.
At the Halfway House, hot dogs on a roller grill measured 133 degrees, below the required 135-degree hot-holding temperature. Staff discarded the hot dogs and replaced them during the inspection.
Other violations included food residue on a can opener blade, worn cutting boards, grease accumulation, an improperly stored ice scoop and a drain with buildup associated with drain fly activity.
Inspectors additionally found a refrigerator at the seasonally closed pool bar operating at 44.6 degrees. The facility was instructed to repair or replace the unit and verify proper temperatures before returning it to food-storage service.
Several deficiencies were corrected on-site, while others required cleaning, repairs or changes to food-handling procedures.
Country Bagel Bakery — West Chester
At Country Bagel Bakery, 929 S. High St., inspectors identified maintenance and sanitation deficiencies involving food-service equipment and building surfaces.
The establishment was directed to replace damaged or soiled caulking around its mop sink and three-bay sink, repair a damaged wall section beneath the coffee station and replace cracked floor tiles in the food-service area and walk-in refrigerator.
Inspectors also required cleaning around the bagel oven and on ceiling vents in the food-service and retail areas.
