MALVERN, PA — Chester County health inspectors cited two Malvern food businesses Sept. 3 for violations involving food labeling, storage and sanitation, including improperly labeled packaged foods that inspectors directed one establishment to remove from its shelves.
At NICAMEX LLC, 446 Lancaster Ave., inspectors reported that several prepackaged foods lacked required labeling information, which could include the product name, ingredient statement, net weight, distributor information and nutrition facts.
The affected products included nanches, shrimp, small fish, tamarind and dried hibiscus flowers, according to the Chester County Health Department. The inspection report directed the business to remove the products from its shelves and stated they could no longer be sold without proper labeling.
Inspectors also found that the women’s restroom lacked a covered waste receptacle for sanitary napkins and that the restroom handwashing sink had an empty paper-towel dispenser.
East Star Cuisine Inc., 81 Lancaster Ave., Suite 3, was cited for several food-storage and facility issues.
Inspectors found meat stored in a grocery bag, which is not approved for direct food storage, and directed the restaurant to transfer it to an approved food-grade container or storage bag.
Bowls were also being used as scoops in containers of soy sauce and sugar. Inspectors directed the restaurant to use approved scoops and store them so their handles do not contact the food.
Bags of rice were found stored directly on the floor in a storage area. The rice was moved at least six inches above the floor during the inspection, correcting the violation on-site.
The restaurant also lacked paper towels at a handwashing sink in the women’s restroom. Paper towels were supplied during the inspection.
Additional violations involved stained or improperly surfaced ceiling tiles and a storage area behind a curtain that inspectors determined needed cleaning and organization.
Five other Chester County food facilities listed in the Sept. 3 inspection results were in compliance: Avon Grove Sports Boosters in West Grove; Compass Pizza in Honey Brook; Green Street Grill and R Five Wines in Downingtown; and Westlakes Cafe in Berwyn.
The Chester County Health Department cautions that an inspection represents conditions observed at a particular date and time and may not reflect an establishment’s long-term sanitation or food-safety status.
