WEST PIKELAND TWP, PA — West Pikeland Township supervisors will hold a special meeting Monday, October 26, to reconsider options for selling a publicly owned cultural center occupied by SALT Performing Arts, extending deliberations over a property sale that could force the Chester County nonprofit theater organization to relocate.
The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the township administration building, 1645 Art School Road in Chester Springs, according to an official public notice.
The decision to reconvene follows an October 19 vote in which supervisors approved moving toward a sale of the cultural center by a 3-2 margin. The township had sought a minimum purchase price of $2 million to help finance a proposed police facility.
The October 26 meeting introduces another opportunity for supervisors to consider the property’s future before completing a sale.
The township’s notice identifies the meeting’s purpose as discussing “options related to the Sale of the Cultural Center,” but does not specify the alternatives under consideration or indicate whether a formal vote is planned.
The meeting follows public concerns about the potential displacement of SALT Performing Arts, which operates a theater at the Art School Road property.
The nonprofit, founded and led by artistic director Lauren McComas, has invested approximately $400,000 in renovations to the facility, including improvements completed in September 2025.
Those investments included financing backed by a $200,000 loan personally guaranteed by McComas, according to reporting by The Philadelphia Inquirer.
SALT occupies the building under a 10-year license agreement that began January 1, 2024. The agreement includes a provision allowing termination with 30 days’ notice, creating uncertainty about the organization’s continued occupancy if the property changes hands.
A purchaser could elect to maintain the existing arrangement or exercise available termination rights, depending on the terms governing the transaction.
The potential sale has placed the township’s property and financing priorities in conflict with the theater organization’s investment in the facility and its ability to continue operating there.
SALT maintains another Chester County location at 19 Hagerty Boulevard in West Chester. Its programming includes theatrical productions, performing arts education, youth camps and community events.
The October 26 meeting could provide further direction on whether supervisors proceed with the sale, modify its terms, or consider another approach to the property’s disposition.
However, the public notice does not identify any proposed changes to the sale process or commitments concerning SALT’s continued occupancy.
Residents and other interested parties may attend the special meeting in person.
Individuals requiring disability-related accommodations may contact the township office at 610-590-5300.
