Cockroaches, Unsafe Practices Found at Local Restaurants

Food safety

WEST CHESTER, PA — The Chester County Health Department reported violations at two food establishments during follow-up inspections conducted on April 30, while multiple other facilities were found in compliance.

At Buena Vista Restaurant, 215 Lancaster Ave. in Malvern, inspectors observed German cockroach activity, including five adults and one gravid female, beneath a hot water heater above a three-compartment sink.

Inspectors directed the facility to contact pest control, conduct deep cleaning, use glue boards to monitor activity, and remove live insects using a vacuum, with contents discarded in an outdoor dumpster.

At Dim Sum Taste, 127 W. Gay St. in West Chester, inspectors cited multiple violations related to food safety practices and facility maintenance.

According to inspection reports, the person in charge lacked adequate food safety knowledge, and staff were instructed to review the food code, retrain employees, and correct violations.

Inspectors observed improper thawing of meats and fish at room temperature, which must instead be thawed in refrigeration, under cold running water, or during cooking.

Raw eggs were found stored above ready-to-eat foods in a walk-in refrigerator, creating a risk of cross-contamination. The items were relocated during the inspection.

Additional violations included food stored in non-approved plastic bags, unlabeled squeeze bottles, missing plumbing under a prep sink, and knives stored in unsanitary locations.

Inspectors also noted food preparation occurring in a basement area not approved for such use and lacking a handwashing sink. The practice was ordered to stop.

Other issues included a blocked handwashing sink, a need for a divider between cooking equipment, and unclean hood filters and canopy.

The department noted that inspections represent conditions at the time of review and may not reflect long-term compliance.
