The Institutes Revamps Risk Management Credential for AI Era

The Institutes

MALVERN, PA — The Institutes has overhauled its Associate in Risk Management designation, introducing a redesigned curriculum focused on artificial intelligence, data analytics, and enterprise decision-making as organizations increasingly expect risk professionals to play a larger role in corporate strategy.

The updated Associate in Risk Management (ARM) designation replaces its previous curriculum with three new courses and an ethics requirement intended to prepare professionals to evaluate interconnected business risks and apply emerging technologies in operational and strategic settings.

The redesign reflects broader changes in the profession, where risk managers are increasingly expected to advise executives on resilience, regulatory challenges and long-term business planning rather than focus solely on insurance and loss prevention.

The Institutes cited a recent McKinsey report in which more than 1,300 experts concluded that organizational leaders must balance immediate and long-term risks using stronger executive-level insights.

Rather than relying primarily on conceptual instruction, the revised curriculum uses case studies and scenario-based exercises modeled on real-world organizational challenges. Coursework also incorporates artificial intelligence, automation and data analytics alongside traditional risk management principles.

Adam Carmichael, president of The Institutes Knowledge Group, said the designation was redesigned to reflect the expanding responsibilities of risk professionals.

“Professionals not only need to be able to interpret risk data clearly, but also effectively collaborate across operations, compliance, finance, and leadership functions,” Carmichael said. “We built the new Associate in Risk Management designation to develop those skills and more, preparing RMI talent to guide strategy and strengthen resilience across the organization.”

The ARM designation is intended for risk management and insurance professionals as well as individuals in other industries whose responsibilities include identifying and managing organizational risk.

The Institutes, a nonprofit educational organization founded in 1909, said the updated designation is designed to provide participants with practical skills to navigate evolving business risks and emerging technologies while strengthening their role in organizational decision-making.
