MALVERN, PA — Vishay Intertechnology Inc. (NYSE: VSH) introduced a new line of thin-film chip resistors designed to handle more power at high frequencies in compact electronic systems, targeting telecommunications, satellite, aerospace, and defense applications where board space and RF performance are constrained.
The Malvern-based component maker said its Vishay Sfernice CHEP series uses an aluminum nitride substrate and comes in standard 0402 and 0603 surface-mount case sizes.
The 0402 devices carry a standard power rating of 1.2 watts, while the 0603 versions are rated at 1.8 watts. When mounted under specified datasheet conditions, those ratings rise to 1.8 watts and 2.8 watts, respectively, according to Vishay.
That higher power density is intended to let engineers reduce component footprint without adding a heatsink or moving to a larger package.
The resistors are also designed for high-frequency operation. In a flip-chip configuration, 0402 devices support frequencies up to 50 GHz, while wraparound mounting supports operation to 20 GHz. The 0603 devices operate at frequencies up to 40 GHz.
Vishay said the components have LC values as low as 1 x 10⁻²⁴, reducing parasitic effects that can contribute to phase shift, impedance variation and noise in RF designs.
The company is positioning the series for use in low-Earth-orbit satellites, base station terminals, 5G and 6G networks, remote radio units and antennas.
Other targeted uses include drones, satellite payloads, guidance and telemetry equipment, data links and phased-array radar systems.
The resistors are available in resistance values from 20 ohms to 120 ohms, with tolerances as tight as ±1% and a temperature coefficient of ±100 ppm/°C. A ±50 ppm/°C specification is available on request.
The devices are rated for operation from -55°C to 155°C and are RoHS-compliant and halogen-free, according to Vishay.
