WEST GROVE, PA — Southern Chester County Pharmacy has begun offering prescription containers designed for single-handed opening, becoming one of the first U.S. pharmacies to adopt a packaging system intended to improve medication access for patients with arthritis, limited hand strength and other dexterity challenges.
The independent pharmacy is offering SnapSlide prescription vials, which replace the conventional push-and-twist cap with a sliding closure. The system is designed to make medication containers easier to open and close while maintaining established child-resistance standards.
Patients can request the containers when filling eligible prescriptions, according to a news release issued on behalf of SnapSlide.
The change addresses a practical challenge for patients who have difficulty operating conventional child-resistant prescription bottles. The sliding mechanism is intended to reduce the physical effort required to access medication without eliminating the protective function of the closure.
“SnapSlide fixes a serious, long-term problem in such a simple way that you wonder why it wasn’t done this way all along,” said Al Gagliardi, owner of Southern Chester County Pharmacy.
The packaging system was developed by SnapSlide LLC, a Jessup, Pennsylvania-based company founded by inventor and Chief Executive Officer Rocky Batzel and Chief Operating Officer Chason Sordoni.
SnapSlide reported that nearly 90% of consumers participating in its focus groups preferred the sliding closure over conventional prescription vial caps.
Approximately two-thirds of participants also indicated that the packaging could influence their loyalty to a brand or willingness to switch products. The company did not provide the focus groups’ sample size or methodology in the release.
Beyond accessibility, the packaging is intended to help patients manage medications independently and potentially improve adherence to prescribed treatment schedules.
The company has received packaging industry awards recognizing its patented design and sustainability features.
SnapSlide also develops closures for over-the-counter medications, household products and other consumer packaging applications.
For Southern Chester County Pharmacy, the introduction provides an alternative dispensing option for patients who have difficulty using standard prescription containers.
The new vials are available upon request for eligible medications. Additional information about the packaging system is available at www.snapslide.com.
