DOWNINGTOWN, PA — This May, the Downingtown Area School District (DASD) is commemorating Jewish American Heritage Month and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month with a series of programs focused on honoring the history, achievements, and contributions of these communities.
Key events will include a live virtual presentation by Holocaust survivor Steen Metz on Monday, May 19. Hosted in collaboration with the Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center, Metz will recount his experiences as a child deported from Denmark and surviving the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp. Community members are encouraged to register to participate.
Later in the month, actor Hudson Yang, known for his role in ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat, will participate in a virtual discussion with DASD students. Yang will discuss his experiences as an Asian American in the entertainment industry, fostering a deeper understanding of representation and identity.
Chloe Shih, a senior at Downingtown STEM Academy, expressed her enthusiasm for the program by stating, “I am thrilled to celebrate AAPI Month by welcoming Hudson Yang for a fireside chat. It’s an incredible opportunity to highlight AAPI voices and inspire our community.”
Throughout May, DASD students and staff will also engage in lessons and activities that celebrate the diverse contributions of Jewish American and AAPI individuals. These initiatives aim to create a richer understanding of the historical and cultural impact of these communities.
The district’s programming reflects its commitment to fostering respect, inclusion, and education about the diverse experiences that shape society.
