WEST GROVE, PA — Avon Grove School District has opened a new 2,000-square-foot Makerspace at Avon Grove High School, unveiling a student-designed innovation lab that blends advanced technology with hands-on, cross-disciplinary learning.
Launched on November 11, the Makerspace reflects more than a year of planning led by four members of the school’s Chief Science Officers chapter — Dylan Adams, Aarnav Behari, Mia Fish, and Samantha Lin. Their charge was simple but ambitious: design a flexible, future-ready environment that brings real-world making directly into the classroom.
Superintendent Scott DeShong called the result one of the region’s most comprehensive and uniquely student-built learning spaces, emphasizing that the initiative was crafted by students, for students.
The design process began with a community-wide contest that drew more than 50 submissions from students, alumni, faculty, and residents. The winning concepts informed a layout built for collaboration, adaptability, and creative experimentation.
Supported in part by the Avon Grove Education Foundation, the lab features a 17-foot video wall for demonstrations and group work, a fleet of 3D printers for rapid prototyping, and advanced fabrication tools including a waterjet cutter and vinyl printer. Virtual reality systems and high-performance Esports computers expand the space’s capabilities into simulation, engineering, multimedia production, and competitive gaming.
With its mix of industry-grade equipment and student-centered design, the Makerspace positions Avon Grove as one of the region’s leaders in modern, project-based learning — offering a platform where students can explore ideas, build skills, and develop solutions connected to emerging careers.
