DOWNINGTOWN, PA — During the varsity championship match held on Tuesday evening, West Chester East High School came out on top among 22 other Chester County schools in the Chester County Academic Competition, facilitated by the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) and sponsored by Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union. West Chester East will represent Chester County at the PA State Academic Competition on Friday, April 28, at the Pennsylvania State Capitol.

When asked how it felt to be named the Chester County Academic Competition champions, Dr. Brent Jones, coach of West Chester East’s academic team exclaimed, “We are so thrilled to be representing Chester County and we can’t wait to go to the Capitol – it’s so exciting!”

After a slow start for West Chester East, the team battled back in the final round to take and maintain the lead.

“Tonight proved that all of our hard work has paid off. We have been practicing three times a week with the same vision — winning this year’s competition. We’re really relishing this moment right now,” said Alex Chen, captain of the West Chester East team. “Each of us played our part tonight, and it truly couldn’t have gone any better. I also want to give a shout-out to Downingtown East and STEM Academy for all their incredible work to get here tonight. It was an excellent match,” said Chen.

Hosted by the Honorable John Lawrence and sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA), West Chester East High School will compete against districts representing their regional intermediate unit from across the state. The championship team will receive a $2,000 scholarship for their high school, while the finalists will each receive $500 for their school.
