COATESVILLE, PA — The Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) will host a landmark celebration on Friday, May 2, 2025, honoring the 55th anniversary of the Special Olympics at the Coatesville Memorial Stadium. The event will showcase the resilience, athleticism, and determination of over 1,000 athletes from Chester County, aged 8 to 22.
Opening ceremonies will commence at 10 a.m., with athlete and volunteer check-in beginning between 9 and 9:30 a.m. Competitions will run from 10:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., encompassing track, field, and jumping events, as well as adaptive races for athletes using assistive devices.
“Watching this event grow has been one of the greatest joys of my life,” said Debbie Phillips, event organizer and Health and Physical Education teacher at the CCIU Child & Career Development Center. Phillips has spearheaded the event for the past 15 years, witnessing its development into a community staple.
Nearly 400 volunteers, acting as supporters and mentors for the athletes, will assist in making the day a success. The event also enjoys sponsorship from local businesses such as CCRES Educational and Behavioral Services, Austill’s Educational Therapy Services, and Bentley Systems, among others, with Northbrook Press providing uniforms and T-shirts.
What began as a modest gathering over two decades ago has flourished into an inspiring tradition uniting athletes, volunteers, and the entire community. The public is encouraged to attend and join in the celebration of perseverance, inclusion, and joy.
