Fire, Contamination Fears, and Temperature Violations Hit County Kitchens

WEST CHESTER, PA — The Chester County Health Department reported multiple food safety violations at several establishments following inspections conducted Wednesday, including temperature control issues, sanitation deficiencies, and equipment violations.

Inspectors cited FARMHOUSE COFFEE & ESPRESSO BAR in Downingtown for multiple violations, including milk stored above required temperatures, lack of thermometers in cooling units, and use of non-commercial refrigeration equipment.

According to the report, a dishwasher not approved for commercial use must be removed, and a malfunctioning cooler must be repaired within 72 hours.

At GOLDEN MART in Coatesville, the department conducted an emergency inspection after an electrical fire Tuesday evening.

Officials said the fire was contained to an electrical panel and extinguished by an employee, but the facility remains closed due to power loss and potential contamination from fire extinguisher chemicals.

Inspectors ordered disposal of exposed food items, including soft-packaged goods and certain refrigerated beverages, while permitting sealed items and unaffected backroom inventory to remain.

MARIO’S BAKERY & RESTAURANT in Kennett Square was cited for issues including missing paper towels at handwashing stations, non-functioning lights, and a propped-open door that could allow pest entry.

At the RESIDENCE INN in Exton, inspectors reported inadequate sanitizer concentrations, missing soap at a hand sink, and equipment maintenance issues, including a malfunctioning sink stopper and freezer buildup.

SAGE MEDITERRANEAN CUISINE in Phoenixville received multiple violations, including improper food temperatures, lack of date marking, inadequate handwashing practices, and insufficient food safety knowledge by the person in charge.

Inspectors also cited malfunctioning refrigeration units operating above safe temperatures and required immediate repairs.

STATION 142 in West Chester was cited for temperature violations, improper sanitizer levels, expired dairy products, and lack of accessible thermometers.

Additional issues included insufficient hot water supply and improperly labeled cleaning chemicals.

The health department noted that inspection reports represent conditions observed at the time of inspection and may not reflect long-term compliance.

  • Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar in West Goshen;
  • Mary Pat’s Provisions in Kennett Square;
  • Midtown Social in Berwyn;
  • Montesano Bros Italian Market & Catering in Chester Springs;
  • Red Sombrero in West Chester;
  • Rolling Stars LLC in West Chester;
  • Taco Bell in Downingtown;
  • Taco Mar in Frazer;
  • Taco Maya in Exton;
  • Warwick Child Care in Exton; and
  • WCU Main Pod by Aramark in West Chester.
