COATESVILLE, PA — A specialized education program in Coatesville is highlighting the progress of a student whose development reflects the approach used at the Child and Career Development Center campus operated by the Chester County Intermediate Unit.

The center, known as CCDC Coatesville, provides education and support services for students with autism, emotional support needs, multiple disabilities and life skills development.

School officials say the individualized structure has helped students like Luke, a child enrolled at the campus, improve engagement and classroom participation.

According to the Chester County Intermediate Unit, Luke’s daily routine includes a paced curriculum, flexible instruction and multimodal learning strategies designed to match his learning needs.

Staff members also incorporate sensory breaks throughout the school day, including opportunities to ride a bicycle through the building or spend time on indoor and outdoor swings.

Teachers say the breaks help students regulate their energy before returning to instruction.

The program’s behavior support staff also focus on building relationships with students while reinforcing positive behavior in the classroom.

CCDC Coatesville is one of two Child and Career Development Center campuses serving Chester County students, alongside the Engle campus located in West Grove.

The Chester County Intermediate Unit said the program provides placements for students whose needs may require services beyond those available in traditional classrooms.

Officials said the network is preparing to expand with the opening of a third campus, CCDC Great Valley, scheduled for fall 2026.

The new facility will offer programming for autistic support, emotional support, life skills development and multiple disabilities services for students from elementary age through age 21.

School officials said the expansion is expected to provide additional placement options for school districts across Chester County and surrounding communities.

“CCDC is committed to creating nurturing spaces where students can learn, grow, and thrive within their home community,” CCDC Coatesville Principal Kim Ring said in a statement.

“Every student deserves to be supported, seen, and celebrated, and Luke is a wonderful example of what’s possible when the right environment meets the right support,” Ring said.
