WEST CHESTER, PA — West Chester University’s Department of Theatre & Dance will bring a cherished American story to the MainStage Theatre later this month with its production of Little Women, The Broadway Musical, running November 20–23.
Adapted from Louisa May Alcott’s enduring novel, the musical follows the March sisters — Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy — as they confront ambition, family expectations, and personal loss during the Civil War era. The production, guest directed by Amy Dugas Brown, centers on Jo March’s struggle to define her voice as a writer and her determination to turn lived experience into lasting storytelling.
Performances will be held at the E.O. Bull Center for the Arts at 2 East Rosedale Avenue. Evening shows are scheduled for November 20 through 22 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on November 23 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets range from $14 to $24, with student and senior discounts available. An ASL-interpreted performance is set for Friday, November 21.
Featuring a book by Allan Knee, music by Jason Howland, and lyrics by Mindi Dickstein, the musical blends a sweeping score with themes of resilience, creativity, and family bonds. Cast members include Haily Lara as Jo, Gwen Nolen as Amy, Tazmin Ratkowski as Meg, Elizabeth McMunn as Beth, and Shannon McCarthy as Marmee, among others.
WCU’s Department of Theatre & Dance, accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre, emphasizes both artistic training and broader academic development. Through its programs in musical theatre, performance, design and production, and dance, the department prepares students for professional careers while fostering creativity, collaboration, and social awareness.
With its mix of humor, heart, and nostalgia, Little Women offers audiences a meaningful start to the holiday season.
