EAST WHITELAND TWP, PA — Construction on northbound U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) in East Whiteland Township, Chester County, and Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, will continue through late September as workers address sinkhole remediation under a $22.4 million Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) project.
The northbound section of U.S. 202 remains closed 24/7 between Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard/Prince Frederick Boulevard. During this period, motorists are being detoured via Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard, with local access maintained throughout. Drivers are advised to anticipate significant delays when approaching the area.
The project, designed to provide a long-term solution to recurring sinkhole issues, includes a limited mobility grouting program. This process involves drilling a grid of holes through the pavement and injecting pressurized grout to fill underground voids, stabilizing the subsurface and mitigating future risks. Additional improvements include drainage enhancements and pavement reconstruction.
Upon completing the northbound construction phase in September, the project will shift to reconstructing the southbound lanes, scheduled for early 2026.
This initiative follows years of disruptions caused by sinkholes along U.S. 202 and Route 29. “Stabilizing the ground and replacing vulnerable infrastructure is critical to ensuring the region’s safety and traffic flow,” PennDOT emphasized in its updates. Heidelberg Materials, LLC, serves as the general contractor, with federal funds fully financing the project.
Motorists are encouraged to remain alert, follow signed detours, and plan extra travel time while navigating this vital infrastructure upgrade.
