Major I-95 Reconstruction Project Set to Begin in Northeast Philadelphia

Traffic alert, expect delays

PHILADELPHIA, PA — A $355.3 million project to reconstruct and enhance a key section of I-95 in Northeast Philadelphia will officially begin on Monday, May 5, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).

The project, known as Section BR3, spans from Wheatsheaf Lane to Margaret Street and includes the widening of northbound I-95 to four lanes, replacing three bridges, rehabilitating two ramps at the Betsy Ross Bridge Interchange, and installing new retaining and sound walls. Additionally, Pearce Street will be realigned to connect to Orthodox Street.

A temporary traffic pattern will be implemented early in the project, shifting three lanes of both northbound and southbound traffic to the southbound side in preparation for northbound construction. Travel restrictions for these adjustments will be announced in advance.

The initiative, scheduled for completion by late 2027, is part of a broader effort to modernize I-95. It follows the successful completion of Sections BR0 and BR2 and will be coordinated with the ongoing Section BS2 project. Future phases will address additional corridor improvements through 2029.

Motorists are advised to anticipate changing traffic patterns and to remain cautious while driving through the work zone.
