Chester County Motorists Brace for Disruption as $6.3 Million Roundabout Construction Continues

Flagging

LONDONDERRY TOWNSHIP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that the ongoing construction on Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike) is set to cause significant traffic disruptions in the coming weeks.

From Monday, January 29, through to Friday, February 2, between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM daily, there will be a lane closure with flagging on Route 41 between Route 796 (Derry Meeting Road) and White Horse Road. This forms part of a $6.3 million project to construct a roundabout at the intersection of Route 41 and Route 926 (Street Road) aimed at improving safety, increasing mobility, and accommodating future traffic demands.

In addition to this, a previous notice reminded drivers that Route 926 will be closed and detoured between Route 41 and Route 796 starting this week and running through to late October 2024. During this closure, motorists are directed to use Route 41 and Route 796.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through or near the work areas due to expected backups and delays. All scheduled activities are subject to weather conditions.

The project’s scope involves constructing a single-lane, four-legged roundabout slightly south of the existing intersection. Existing pavement at the current intersection will be removed, and Route 41 will be reconstructed and resurfaced for approximately 1,900 feet. Route 926 will also be realigned for about 1,400 feet.

The agricultural land to the west of the roundabout will be used for stormwater management. To the east, the existing Route 41 will be vacated and replaced with a proposed wetland mitigation area.

In addition to these changes, the project will include relocating driveway access, reconstructing the roadway approaches, and installing roundabout lighting, signage, and pavement markings.

During the first stage of construction, Route 926 will be closed and detoured. Motorists on Route 41 will also encounter lane shifts onto the existing northbound shoulder. In stage two, both Route 41 and Route 926 will be closed and detoured.

J. D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, PA, is the general contractor for this project, which is financed entirely with federal funds.
