WEST CHESTER, PA — This summer, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) is set to revolutionize the summer camp experience for teenagers with the introduction of three brand-new camps designed specifically to meet the unique needs and interests of teens aged 11 to 15. The new offerings include the Leaders in Training, Counselors in Training, and Teen Trek camps, each promising an exciting blend of adventure, personal growth, and fun.

Understanding that teens are at a pivotal stage of seeking independence while still benefiting from guidance, YGBW has crafted these camps to offer just the right mix of freedom and structure. “Teens need a different experience than what typical summer camps offer,” says Bridgette Barbera-Byrne, Senior Association Director of Youth Programs and Summer Camp at YGBW. “Our goal is to nurture their maturity through camps that balance educational and leadership development with exhilarating activities.”

Teen Trek stands out as a thrilling option for middle school and high school students alike, featuring field trips to escape rooms, amusement parks, sports arenas, and more. Whether your teen is looking to develop leadership skills or simply enjoy a summer filled with unforgettable experiences, YGBW’s camps cater to various interests and developmental stages.

The challenges of providing teens with a productive and safe summer are well-documented, with many caregivers struggling to find suitable activities that foster independence while ensuring safety. YGBW addresses this concern by offering flexible camp options, allowing families to select specific weeks rather than committing to an entire summer. This approach not only accommodates busy schedules but also respects the growing autonomy of teenagers.

In addition to summer programming, YGBW is committed to supporting teen development year-round. With a recent $1.4 million investment, the organization is expanding its teen programs, including the upcoming Y Achievers initiative aimed at helping teens of color set and achieve their educational and career aspirations. Furthermore, the revised 7th Grade Initiative will provide free memberships to local 7th graders, encouraging them to explore their passions and adopt healthy lifestyles through various activities.

Jazmyn Hudson, Senior Association Director of Teen Development at YGBW, shares her enthusiasm for working with teens: “Empowering teens with the tools to navigate their journey towards independence is a pathway to shaping tomorrow’s leaders. We’re dedicated to transforming the community’s perception of older youth and showcasing their valuable contributions.”

This summer and beyond, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine is poised to make a significant impact on the lives of local teens. By offering engaging, supportive, and flexible programming, YGBW is not just running summer camps; it’s building the foundation for the next generation of leaders, innovators, and changemakers.
