WEST CHESTER, PAState Senator Carolyn Comitta is urging Chester County seniors to apply for the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program. This initiative provides eligible residents aged 60 and older with vouchers to purchase fresh, locally grown produce.

The program offers five $10 vouchers to qualified seniors. These vouchers can be redeemed at participating farms and farmers markets for unprepared fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

“As the weather warms and local produce comes into season, many of our residents will be turning to our local farms and farmers markets to purchase their fruits and vegetables,” Comitta said. “The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program helps ensure that seniors can have access to local and nutritious food options for free. I encourage all eligible residents to apply for this great program that supports our local farms while expanding access to healthy produce for our older neighbors.”

Seniors must meet specific income guidelines to qualify. For a one-person household, the total income cannot exceed $27,861. For a two-person household, the limit is $37,814. Applicants must also be 60 years or older, or turn 60 by December 31, 2024.

Vouchers can be used between June 1, 2024, and November 30, 2024. A list of participating farms and markets is available online.

Enhancing Senior Health & Local Agriculture: The Power of Fresh Produce

This program aims to address food insecurity among seniors by enhancing their access to nutritious foods. It also supports local agriculture by directing funds to area farmers. By providing these vouchers, the program helps seniors maintain a healthy diet and fosters community connections through local markets.

Access to fresh produce is crucial for senior health. Nutritious foods can help manage chronic conditions, boost immunity, and improve overall well-being. This program ensures that financial constraints do not prevent seniors from accessing these benefits.

Moreover, supporting local farms has broader economic and environmental implications. Keeping agricultural dollars within the community helps sustain local economies. It also reduces the carbon footprint associated with transporting food over long distances.

Senator Comitta’s initiative reflects a commitment to both public health and local sustainability. Encouraging seniors to utilize the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program addresses immediate nutritional needs while promoting long-term community resilience.

In summary, the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program provides a vital service to Chester County seniors.
