Weeks of Break-Ins End With Wilmington Man’s Arrest

WILMINGTON, DE — A Wilmington man has been charged in connection with an attempted burglary and a series of alleged thefts and trespassing incidents following a monthlong police investigation.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, officers responded to multiple complaints between June 25 and July 21 involving an attempted burglary, thefts and trespassing incidents in the 1300 block of Riverview Avenue, the 500 block of Ogle Avenue, the 900 block of Blackshire Road, the 2500 block of Delaware Avenue and the 2300 block of Ridgeway Road.

Police said the investigations were assigned to Detective Joran Merced of the Criminal Investigations Division. According to investigators, the investigation led detectives to identify 64-year-old Brian Giles as the suspect and obtain warrants for his arrest.

Police reported that officers located Giles at about 12:15 a.m. on July 24 in the 500 block of North Gray Avenue, where he was taken into custody without incident.

According to police, Giles has been charged with:

  • Two counts of theft under $1,500
  • Three counts of third-degree criminal trespass
  • Two counts of trespassing with intent to peer or peep
  • One count of attempted third-degree burglary
  • One count of theft of $1,500 or greater
  • One count of second-degree criminal trespass

Police said Giles was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution after bail was set at $5,000 secured and $7,000 unsecured.

All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
