Pedestrian Killed After Entering Highway, Police Probe Crash

NEW CASTLE, DE — A 71-year-old man was killed Wednesday night after being struck by a vehicle while entering a highway, according to Delaware State Police.

Police reported that at approximately 9:50 p.m. April 22, troopers responded to the southbound lanes of North Dupont Highway near Bacon Avenue for a report of a pedestrian struck.

According to investigators, a Ram 2500 was traveling southbound behind a tractor-trailer when the driver changed lanes. Police said the pedestrian allegedly entered the roadway from the Manor Park Shopping Center into the path of the vehicle.

Authorities reported the front of the Ram struck the pedestrian.

Police said the victim, a 71-year-old man from New Castle, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of family.

According to investigators, the 53-year-old driver of the Ram and a passenger were not injured.

Police reported the roadway was closed for approximately three hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate. Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has video to contact Sgt. J. Jefferson at 302-365-8484 or provide information through Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.

All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
