WILMINGTON, DE — A 33-year-old man has been charged with robbery and assault after police investigated an alleged attack in the Lancaster Avenue area.
According to the New Castle County Police Department, an officer patrolling the area at approximately 1:05 p.m. on July 24 was flagged down by a passerby concerning an incident involving a nearby individual.
Officers located the individual and determined that the person had reportedly been robbed, police said.
According to investigators, the victim had been confronted by a man later identified as Shaleir Sumpter, 33. Police allege that a verbal argument escalated into a physical altercation during which Sumpter struck the victim multiple times in the upper body, causing minor injuries.
Investigators allege that Sumpter took the victim’s cellphone charger and umbrella before leaving the area. Police said a passerby witnessed part of the encounter and alerted the nearby officer.
Sumpter was located July 29 and transported to New Castle County Police Headquarters, according to the department. He was charged with one felony count of second-degree robbery and one misdemeanor count of third-degree assault.
Police said Sumpter was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $9,000 cash bail.
All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
