One Dead After Rear-End Crash on Newark Road

NEWARK, DE — A two-vehicle crash in Newark last weekend has resulted in a fatality, according to Delaware State Police.

Police reported the crash occurred around 11:00 p.m. Saturday, April 11, along the northbound lanes of Summit Bridge Road, south of Sunderland Boulevard.

According to investigators, a Ford Fiesta was traveling in the right lane when a Dodge Dakota approached from behind. For reasons still under investigation, police said the front of the Dodge allegedly struck the rear of the Ford.

Authorities reported the Ford’s driver, a 61-year-old man from Bear, was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. Police said he died Thursday, April 16, as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver of the Dodge, a 23-year-old man from Middletown, and a passenger were not injured, according to police.

The roadway was closed for an extended period while investigators processed and cleared the scene, police stated.

The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant video is asked to contact Sergeant J. Jefferson at 302-365-8484 or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.

All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
