NEWARK, DE — A Wilmington man accused of pointing a handgun at two people in Newark is facing additional firearms charges after detectives later reported finding a semiautomatic rifle classified as an assault weapon and large-capacity magazines.
Newark police said the investigation began July 11 after officers responded at approximately 5:10 p.m. to Creek Road near North College Avenue for a report that someone had pointed a handgun at two people.
According to police, the two victims encountered a group of males while in the area. Investigators allege one person approached the victims’ vehicle and struck a window before displaying a black semiautomatic handgun and pointing it at them.
The victims left the area and contacted police, according to investigators.
Newark police said detectives subsequently identified Isaiah Morehead, 23, of Wilmington, as the suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest.
Detectives located Morehead on Sept. 1 and took him into custody, police reported. Investigators subsequently executed a search warrant and reported finding a semiautomatic handgun, ammunition, two large-capacity rifle magazines and a semiautomatic rifle classified as an assault weapon.
Police said the items recovered during the search led detectives to obtain a second arrest warrant on additional firearms-related charges.
Under the first warrant, Morehead was charged with possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, two counts of aggravated menacing and harassment.
The second warrant charged Morehead with manufacture, sale, transfer, purchase, receipt or possession of an assault weapon; possession of a large-capacity magazine during the commission of a felony; three counts of possession, purchase, ownership or control of a firearm or ammunition by a person prohibited; and felony noncompliance with conditions of recognizance bond or conditions.
Morehead was arraigned through Justice of the Peace Court 2. Police reported that bail was set at $65,000 secured on the charges associated with the first warrant and $101,000 cash on the charges associated with the second warrant.
All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
