PHILADELPHIA, PA — A New York man was sentenced yesterday to five years in federal prison for helping steal and sell more than 20 rental vehicles in a yearlong scheme that moved cars across state lines for export overseas, federal prosecutors reported.
U.S. District Judge Kelley Brisbon Hodge also sentenced Amadou Diol, 43, of New York City, to three years of supervised release.
Diol pleaded guilty in March to conspiracy and two counts of transporting stolen vehicles. A federal grand jury had charged him in a superseding indictment in September 2025.
According to court filings and statements cited by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, Diol and others fraudulently rented vehicles from companies across the central and eastern United States from about December 2020 through December 2021.
Prosecutors stated that members of the group used genuine driver’s licenses belonging to people who did not know their information was being used. The conspirators also allegedly created and used fraudulent licenses to obtain rental vehicles.
The vehicles were transported across state lines and sold to buyers who later shipped them overseas, according to federal authorities.
Diol and his co-conspirators received payments through cash, electronic money-transfer services and, in one instance, a luxury vehicle, prosecutors stated.
The FBI investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Meghan Claiborne Bisio and Kara Traster prosecuted it.
