LANCASTER COUNTY, PA —The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced new dates for lane and ramp closures related to the Route 30/Route 222 Interchange Improvement Project. The adjustments were made due to recent weather conditions and will allow the contractor to shift traffic onto the new southbound Route 222 bridge.
Weather permitting, the closures will begin on Sunday, May 11, at 9:00 p.m. with the right lane of westbound Route 30 and the ramp to northbound Route 222 closed until 6:00 a.m. Monday, May 12. A detour will direct westbound Route 30 drivers to the Fruitville Pike Exit, where they can return eastbound to access northbound Route 222.
On Monday, May 12, the left lane of southbound Route 222 and the ramp to eastbound Route 30 will be closed from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, to allow for barrier placement. Southbound Route 222 traffic should use westbound Route 30 to reach Fruitville Pike and then return eastbound on Route 30.
Additional closures are planned from 9:00 p.m. Monday, May 19, to 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 20. This includes the right lane of eastbound Route 30 and the eastbound Route 30 ramp to northbound Route 222. Eastbound Route 30 drivers will be detoured to the Route 23 Exit (New Holland Pike) and directed westbound on Route 30 to reach northbound Route 222.
These closures will finalize the transition of traffic onto the new southbound Route 222 bridge, with demolition of the existing northbound bridge scheduled for fall.
The $72.2 million improvement project also includes widening Route 222 from four to six lanes between the interchange and Stoner Park, constructing additional lanes on interchange ramps, and replacing two ramps over Route 30. Other upgrades will address traffic flow and increase clearance at the Eden Road bridge.
During construction, four travel lanes will remain open, and motorists are reminded to exercise caution in work zones. The project is projected to be completed by September 2027, with JD Eckman, Inc. serving as the general contractor.
