WAWA, PA — Wawa has launched a new initiative designed to combat food insecurity in underserved communities. The “Buy a Kids Meal, Make an Impact” program, a part of Wawa’s Fly Beyond initiative, promises that for every Wawa Kids Meal purchased through July 28, Wawa will make a donation to local Feeding America Food Bank partners.
The initiative aims to address the alarming rate of child hunger in the country. Greg Higgerson, Chief Development Officer, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, a partner food bank of Wawa and The Wawa Foundation, stated, “One in five children is at risk of going to bed hungry. Fly Beyond program support from Wawa and The Wawa Foundation helps us ensure kids not only have more access to food and snacks, but it helps us add fresh, healthy ingredients to build healthy habits.”
On average, food bank partners can provide three meals for every $1 donated. With this program, Wawa and its customers are projected to fund around 45,000 meals per week, amounting to nearly one million meals throughout the duration of the campaign. Proceeds from each Wawa store will directly benefit local Feeding America Food Banks within the operating area of the store.
Mary Rose Hannum, Vice President of Food and Beverage at Wawa, expressed excitement over the dual benefits of the initiative. “Wawa Kids Meals are a great option for families on the go, and now these meals can inspire goodness in the community with a portion of proceeds helping fight food insecurity,” she said. “We hope this initiative also inspires conversations about the importance of helping others get access to nutritious food and reducing hunger in our communities and helping kids thrive.”
The Fly Beyond programs, launched in 2023 with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, aim to fight food insecurity at the community level. The initiative, supported by Wawa and The Wawa Foundation, focuses on increasing access to fresh, nutritious food for underserved youth through Feeding America Food Banks. The “Buy One, Make an Impact” Kids Meal program is a significant addition to these efforts, further signaling Wawa’s commitment to inspiring goodness and tackling food insecurity in the Greater Philadelphia region.
