PHILADELPHIA, PA — Construction is set to begin Monday, August 18, on an $8.5 million safety improvement project along Vine Street in Center City, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced.
The federally funded initiative aims to enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists along the stretch between 8th Street and Broad Street (Route 611). Key components of the project include a road diet reducing lanes from three to two in both directions, upgraded traffic signals, ADA-compliant curb ramps and bump-outs, new bike lanes, and a full mill and overlay of the roadway surface.
PennDOT expects these modifications to reduce crashes and improve conditions at the seven intersections within the targeted corridor.
Starting August 18 and continuing through January 16, 2026, weekday lane closures will occur from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Vine Street in both directions at Broad Street to allow for sidewalk reconstruction. Delays are anticipated, and motorists are advised to plan accordingly.
C. Abbonizio Contractors, Inc., based in Sewell, New Jersey, is leading construction, which is projected to conclude in summer 2026.
