TESCO Expands Meter Training as Utilities Face Skills Gap

TESCO Metering

BRISTOL, PA — TESCO Metering announced an expansion of its residential meter training and certification programs as utilities across North America face growing demand for skilled metering professionals amid grid modernization efforts.

The expanded programs are intended to address workforce readiness challenges tied to advanced metering infrastructure deployments, electric vehicle charging systems, distributed energy resources, and evolving regulatory requirements.

TESCO said its Residential Meter Certification Program provides standardized training in residential meter installation, safety procedures, diagnostics, socket inspection, and meter accuracy validation.

“Training can no longer be informal or inconsistent,” said Tom Lawton, president and CEO of TESCO Metering. “This program establishes a repeatable certification standard grounded in decades of field experience and technical expertise.”

The company said it trains more than 1,000 technicians annually and supports more than 500 utilities across North America. TESCO also reported that it teaches at more than 75% of meter schools in the United States.

TESCO said its programs are designed to reduce inconsistencies in utility training as metering systems become more interconnected and subject to stricter operational and safety requirements.

The company’s training curriculum includes residential meter installation practices, hazard mitigation, field diagnostics, troubleshooting, and meter testing procedures.
