NEWARK, DE — StorageHeaven is positioning its TapeMaster appliances to move data across all 10 generations of LTO tape as LTO-10 eliminates backward compatibility, increasing migration pressure on organizations whose archives depend on aging drives to remain readable.
The company’s appliances support LTO-1 through LTO-10 across the TapeMaster product family, using source and destination drives in a single chassis to copy data directly between generations without a host computer, backup application or operating system.
That architecture addresses a compatibility constraint that has tightened across recent LTO generations. Drives through LTO-7 could read media two generations back and write one generation back, while LTO-8 and LTO-9 narrowed that range. LTO-10 eliminates backward read and write compatibility entirely.
As a result, organizations cannot insert an older cartridge into an LTO-10 drive and migrate it directly. Moving an LTO-3 archive to current media, for example, requires access to different drive generations capable of bridging the compatibility gap.
StorageHeaven said TapeMaster handles those transfers by pairing the required drives within an appliance and moving data directly between them.
“Cloning runs fastest when the copy moves directly between drives, without a server or backup software in the path,” StorageHeaven Director Gordon said. “That lets the drives work at close to their rated speed on a bit-for-bit copy.”
The company rates TapeMaster throughput at as much as 300 MB per second for each half-height drive and 400 MB per second for each full-height LTO-9 or LTO-10 drive. StorageHeaven said effective throughput can exceed 4 TB an hour with compression.
TapeMaster operates independently of file systems, including LTFS, according to the company. Its Clone & Verify mode performs verification as data is written rather than requiring a separate verification pass after migration.
StorageHeaven cited a deployment at an unnamed major Hollywood studio where it said a cloning process that previously required one to two days was reduced to several hours using a TapeMaster-M. The company said previous configurations using standalone LTO drives connected to workstations had failed to reach rated tape-to-tape speeds.
The migration problem extends beyond LTO. StorageHeaven said it continues to build configurations for DLT, SDLT, DDS, AIT, 8mm Exabyte and 9-track archives, formats whose original drives have been out of production for years.
The company has built tape cloning and migration equipment since 1992 and offers legacy-format configurations on request. Its systems have supported interfaces ranging from SCSI to SAS.
For organizations maintaining older archives, StorageHeaven argues that drive availability rather than the physical shelf life of cartridges can determine the practical migration deadline. Older LTO media remains usable only if compatible drives can still be sourced, serviced and kept operational.
That issue is particularly relevant to LTO-3 and LTO-4 archives as compatible drives and replacement parts become scarcer, according to the company.
StorageHeaven said its TapeMaster-SM can consolidate older media at ratios of as much as 500-to-1, potentially reducing 1,000 cartridges to as few as two depending on the source and destination capacities. The company cited healthcare organizations moving LTO-3 and LTO-4 archives onto LTO-9 as one application.
For high-volume projects, the TapeMaster-SA12 provides 12-tape sequential automation, while the SA24 and SA40 increase automated capacity for larger migrations.
StorageHeaven backs its systems with at least 10 years of sales availability and 15 years of product support, a policy intended to extend the service window for organizations managing long-lived archives.
With LTO-10 unable to read media from any earlier LTO generation, archive operators moving older data onto current media increasingly need migration hardware that maintains access to both the source generation and the newer destination format.
