Route 30 Shutdown to Paralyze Weekend Traffic at Route 222

Traffic Alert

LANCASTER COUNTY, PA — Motorists should prepare for major disruptions as PennDOT plans a full weekend closure of Route 30 and the Route 222 bridge at a critical Lancaster County interchange, with detours expected to cause widespread congestion.

At a Glance

  • Roads Affected: Route 30 and Route 222 (bridge over Route 30)
  • Dates: Friday, April 17 – Monday, April 20 (backup: April 24 – April 27)
  • Times: 9:00 PM Friday – 5:00 AM Monday
  • Reason: Bridge beam installation for interchange reconstruction

PennDOT said both directions of Route 30 and the bridge carrying northbound and southbound Route 222 over Route 30 will be fully closed during the weekend to allow crews to erect beams for a new ramp connecting eastbound Route 30 to northbound Route 222.

Drivers will be directed to follow multiple regional detours depending on their route:

  • Eastbound Route 30 traffic will use Route 501 (Lititz Pike) south to Route 222 south to Duke Street, then Route 23 east back to Route 30.
  • Eastbound Route 30 to northbound Route 222 traffic will use Route 272 (Oregon Pike) to Jake Landis Road, then Butter Road north to Route 222.
  • Westbound Route 30 traffic will use Route 222 north to the Route 272 (Oregon Pike) exit, then Butter Road north to Jake Landis Road west to Route 272 south, reconnecting to Route 30.
  • Southbound Route 222 to eastbound Route 30 traffic will use Route 30 west to Fruitville Pike south to Chester Road east to Route 501 (Lititz Pike) south to Route 222 south, then Duke Street to Route 23 east back to Route 30.

In addition to the full closure, drivers should be aware of periodic 15-minute stops on Route 222 southbound to Route 30 westbound during the work period for overhead sign installation.

Motorists are urged to plan extra time, expect heavy delays along detour routes, and avoid the area entirely if possible during the closure window.

The work is part of a $72,173,900 project to реконfigure and expand the Route 30/Route 222 interchange, including widening Route 222 from four lanes to six lanes, replacing bridges, and adding new ramp capacity to improve traffic flow and safety. Construction is expected to continue through September 3, 2027.
