TINICUM TWP, PA — Drivers using Route 291 (Industrial Highway) should prepare for overnight detours and lane restrictions in mid-October as PennDOT advances a $26.5 million bridge replacement project over Conrail tracks.

Westbound Route 291 will be closed and detoured during the overnight work periods. Drivers will be directed to use Scott Way/Bartram Avenue, Interstate 95 and Route 420 (Wanamaker Avenue) before returning to Route 291.
Eastbound Route 291 will remain open, but lane closures with flagging will be in place between Scott Way/Bartram Avenue and Route 420 during the same hours.
Drivers should plan extra time, expect delays and remain alert for changing traffic patterns near the work zone and along the detour. All scheduled work is weather dependent.
The restrictions are part of a project to replace the deteriorating twin bridges carrying Route 291 over Conrail tracks. The new two-span steel plate girder structure will be about nine feet wider than the existing bridge and will carry two 12-foot lanes in each direction with eight-foot shoulders.
The project also includes roadway approach repairs, new signs, pavement markings and guiderail, along with new traffic signals at the Bartram Avenue/Scott Way intersection. The replacement bridge also is being designed to accommodate a future multiuse trail on the eastbound side.
J.D. Eckman Inc. of Atglen is the general contractor. The project is financed entirely with federal funds.
