Route 222 Repairs Could Close a Busy Ramp for Two Weeks

WEST EARL TWP, PA — Drivers using northbound Route 222 near the Brownstown/Rothsville interchange should prepare for a weekend lane closure and a potentially two-week ramp shutdown as PennDOT completes bridge repairs over North Church Street.

Beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, the right lane of northbound Route 222 and the Route 772 entrance ramp to northbound Route 222 will close at the Brownstown/Rothsville interchange.

PennDOT expects repairs in the Route 222 right lane to continue through the weekend. If work proceeds as planned, crews will pour concrete early Sunday, Oct. 11, and reopen the northbound right lane by 6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12.

The mainline closure could remain in place until 6 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, if additional time is needed.

Once the Route 222 right lane reopens, crews will shift to the acceleration-lane portion of the bridge serving the Route 772 entrance ramp. Repairs are needed at two bridge piers located about 60 feet apart.

The Route 772 ramp to northbound Route 222 may remain closed for up to two weeks.

During the ramp closure, drivers will be detoured onto Route 272 (Oregon Pike) southbound to access Route 222 North.

Travel delays are expected around the work zone. Drivers should plan extra time, follow posted signs and use caution when approaching the interchange.

The schedule is weather dependent.

The bridge work is among the remaining items in an $8.5 million pavement preservation project covering 3.3 miles of Route 222 in Manheim, Warwick and West Earl townships. The project extends from the Bushong Road overpass to the Pool Road overpass.

Work has included resurfacing, full-width milling, base repairs, concrete patching, guiderail improvements, line painting and sign upgrades in both directions.
