WILMINGTON, DE — The Delaware State Police have named Nasir Simmons, a 21-year-old from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as the individual allegedly involved in a road rage shooting on Interstate 495 in Wilmington. The incident transpired Thursday morning, causing alarm and triggering an immediate response from the authorities.

According to official reports, troopers were dispatched to I-495 northbound, just south of Philadelphia Pike, at approximately 9:19 a.m. on December 28, 2023, following reports of gunfire. The alleged road rage shooting involved a red Honda Accord that was traveling in the right northbound lane of I-495. Investigators claim the vehicle was struck by multiple rounds of gunfire from a burgundy passenger vehicle, believed to be driven by the suspect.

In the wake of the gunshots, the Honda reportedly pulled over onto the shoulder while the burgundy passenger vehicle fled northbound on I-495. Fortunately, the occupants of the Honda – a 32-year-old man and a two-month-old infant – escaped the traumatic event unscathed.

Delaware State Police’s Troop 2 Criminal Investigations Detectives, through diligent investigation, identified the alleged suspect vehicle as a maroon Hyundai Sonata with Pennsylvania plates. Further investigation led them to develop Nasir Simmons as the suspect in the case.

Simmons was located by the Philadelphia Police Department later that evening on December 28, 2023. He was found with the Hyundai and was taken into custody without any further incidents.

Upon extradition to Delaware, the authorities plan to charge Simmons with one count of felony possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, all serious charges that carry significant penalties.
