EDDYSTONE, PA — Penn Terminals will receive an $11.25 million federal grant to improve cargo-handling infrastructure at its Delaware River seaport in Delaware County, supporting efforts to expand freight capacity and strengthen regional supply chains.
The funding comes through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Port Infrastructure Development Program and will support the terminal’s Cargo Handling project, according to Pennsylvania’s U.S. senators, Republican Dave McCormick and Democrat John Fetterman.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced the award, which will help improve infrastructure used to move goods between Pennsylvania businesses and domestic and international markets.
Penn Terminals handles a range of freight, including shipping containers, fresh produce, steel and other commodities. Its location along the Delaware River provides access to maritime transportation serving the Philadelphia region.
The federal investment is intended to increase the terminal’s cargo-handling capacity and improve the movement of goods through the facility.
“This investment in Penn Terminals will increase cargo capacity along the Delaware River, strengthen our supply chains, and help connect Pennsylvania’s businesses to the world,” Fetterman said.
McCormick, who submitted a letter supporting the project’s application to the Transportation Department, emphasized the economic importance of Pennsylvania’s maritime infrastructure.
“This $11.25 million investment in Penn Terminals will help strengthen our port infrastructure and support the workers and businesses that keep Pennsylvania competitive,” he said.
The Port Infrastructure Development Program provides federal funding for projects designed to improve the safety, efficiency and reliability of freight movement through U.S. ports.
The Penn Terminals award directs federal transportation funding toward an existing commercial seaport that handles both containerized and other cargo, with the goal of improving its ability to accommodate freight shipments.
The announcement identifies cargo-handling infrastructure as the focus of the investment but does not specify individual equipment purchases, construction components or a project completion schedule.
