READING, PA — In a fitting tribute to a local hero, the Penn Street Bridge in Berks County will be renamed as the Police Officer Scott A. Wertz Memorial Bridge. The renaming comes after Governor Josh Shapiro signed Senate Bill 621 into law on Monday night.

Officer Scott A. Wertz was a dedicated public servant who spent two decades in law enforcement. A proud lifelong resident of Berks County and a graduate of Wilson High School, Wertz started his career as a correctional officer at the Berks County prison. He joined the Reading Police Department in 1997, where he served in various roles including patrol division member, field training officer, and part of the auto theft task force in the criminal investigations division. Tragically, Wertz lost his life in the line of duty on August 6, 2006, while responding to a call to assist fellow officers.

Senator Judy Schwank (D-Berks) sponsored the language in Senate Bill 621 to rename the bridge in honor of Officer Wertz. Senator Schwank stated that this tribute is a fitting recognition of Wertz’s service to the City of Reading and his commitment to public safety.

The newly christened Police Officer Scott A. Wertz Memorial Bridge will serve as a lasting reminder of Officer Wertz’s dedication and sacrifice. A formal event to celebrate the naming of the bridge will be held once the new signage is ready.

Senate Bill 621, now known as Act No. 17 of 2023, ensures that Officer Scott A. Wertz’s memory and legacy of service will continue to inspire future generations.
