Overnight Lane Closures on I-95 in South Philadelphia for Long-Term Bridge Repair Work

Traffic, flagging

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will begin overnight lane closures next week on northbound I-95 in South Philadelphia as part of a $37.4 million federally funded project to rehabilitate 27 bridges along the critical interstate corridor.

From Monday, July 28, through Friday, August 1, a single lane will be closed nightly from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM between Packer Avenue and Christian Street. The closure will allow crews to install temporary traffic controls in preparation for long-term bridge repair activities. Motorists are advised to expect delays and allow extra time for travel. All work is weather dependent.

The project includes comprehensive repairs to deteriorating bridge components. On the superstructures, crews will address structural steel, cracked welds, prestressed concrete beams, and damaged bridge decks. Other tasks include replacing expansion joints, sealing deck joints, and upgrading guiderails and steel sign supports.

Substructure work will involve restoring bearing pedestals, replacing damaged concrete, cleaning bridge seats, resetting bearings, and removing accumulated debris.

The initiative also includes the cleaning and repainting of 11 overhead steel sign structures and upgrading existing roadway lighting to energy-efficient LED fixtures. IEW Construction Group, Inc. of Hamilton, New Jersey, is leading the project, which aims to preserve the structural integrity and safety of one of the region’s most heavily traveled corridors.
