MILLERSBURG, PAMid Penn Bank has reaffirmed its commitment to combating hunger and reducing food waste with a $20,000 donation to Sharing Excess, a nonprofit organization based in Philadelphia. The contribution, facilitated through Pennsylvania’s Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP), was presented on April 23 at Sharing Excess’s headquarters in the Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Market.

The donation marks Mid Penn Bank’s third NAP-supported contribution to the organization, following prior gifts in 2022 and 2024. The funds will directly support Sharing Excess’s mission to recover surplus food and deliver it to communities in need across the Philadelphia region.

“Sharing Excess has been an important organization to our team, and we’re proud to support their work through donations and volunteer efforts,” said Jared Utz, Mid Penn Bank’s Regional President. “Their mission is rooted in compassion and action, and their work to rescue and redistribute food is creating real change. We’re thankful to play a role in the profound work they do every day.”

Sharing Excess has made a significant impact since its founding in 2018, redistributing over 100 million meals to food banks, community organizations, and families while preventing millions of pounds of food from ending up in landfills. Its efforts have not only supported food-insecure families but have also reduced the environmental toll of food waste.

The partnership between the nonprofit and the bank goes beyond financial donations. On April 17, Mid Penn Bank employees volunteered at Sharing Excess, helping sort and package fresh produce for local communities. The team recovered 6,000 pounds of food, feeding an estimated 4,800 people while offsetting approximately 21,900 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions.

“It’s incredibly meaningful to have the support of a community-minded partner like Mid Penn Bank,” said Evan Ehlers, Founder and Executive Director of Sharing Excess. “Their generosity helps fuel our mission and enables us to expand our reach, deliver more meals, and build a more sustainable, equitable food system.”

Through its continued partnership with Sharing Excess, Mid Penn Bank is driving forward solutions to tackle food insecurity and sustainability challenges. Looking ahead, their collaboration underscores a shared commitment to creating lasting change and improving the well-being of communities across the region.
