WILMINGTON, DE — InterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq: IDCC) and CCS Insight have released a report examining how energy-aware display technology could reduce power consumption tied to growing global video usage.
The report, titled “Enabling Energy-Aware Display Technology in a Sustainable World,” evaluates InterDigital’s AI-enabled Pixel Value Reduction technology and its potential to improve efficiency across devices and networks.
Testing showed the technology increased smartphone video watch time by up to 22% while reducing energy consumption, including savings of about 15% on televisions, according to the report.
Pixel Value Reduction works by adjusting luminance and contrast based on human visual perception, reducing display power output without noticeable changes in image quality.
The report said video accounts for a majority of digital consumption and is driving increased energy demand across devices, networks, and data infrastructure.
It also cited broader applications of the technology across OLED and AMOLED displays and noted potential network efficiency gains when applied before content transmission.
“Energy efficiency in the delivery of digital media is increasingly relevant as we observe growth in streaming and on-demand services,” said Rajesh Pankaj, chief technology officer at InterDigital.
“With video driving 74% of mobile data traffic, it is clear that even small efficiency gains can have substantial benefits,” said Ben Wood, chief marketing officer at CCS Insight.
The report also highlights regulatory and industry efforts, including European Union energy efficiency initiatives and Green MPEG standards, aimed at improving measurement and control of energy use in digital media.
