PHILADELPHIA, PA — I-95 drivers in Northeast Philadelphia should prepare for two weeks of overnight lane and ramp closures as PennDOT moves toward an Oct. 10 traffic shift that will send three northbound lanes into the median for approximately two years.

On Monday, Sept. 28, the left lane of southbound I-95 will close between the Betsy Ross Bridge and Allegheny Avenue interchanges from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning.
From Tuesday, Sept. 29 through Thursday, Oct. 1, northbound I-95 will have lane closures between the Allegheny Avenue and Betsy Ross Bridge interchanges from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The Castor Avenue ramp to northbound I-95 will also close during those hours. Drivers on Castor Avenue will be detoured north on Aramingo Avenue, then left on Adams Avenue to reach the northbound I-95 entrance at the Betsy Ross Bridge Interchange.
Drivers approaching from Delaware Avenue will be directed east on Venango Street, right on Balfour Avenue, left on Castor Avenue, north on Aramingo Avenue and left on Adams Avenue before entering northbound I-95 at the Betsy Ross Bridge Interchange.
Another round of overnight restrictions is planned Monday, Oct. 5 through Friday, Oct. 9. Northbound and southbound I-95 will have lane closures between the Allegheny Avenue and Betsy Ross Bridge interchanges from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. as crews implement the traffic shift.
The new configuration is expected to be in place by Oct. 10. Three northbound I-95 lanes will shift into the median for approximately two years while PennDOT reconstructs the northbound highway and bridges between Tioga Street and Wheatsheaf Lane.
Four southbound lanes will remain open through the work zone during this phase. The new configuration will connect with the existing I-95/BR3 traffic pattern to the north.
The work is part of the $311 million I-95/AF3 project to reconstruct and widen 1.3 miles of I-95 in both directions between Tioga Street and Wheatsheaf Lane.
Backups and delays may occur throughout the work area. Drivers should plan extra time, consider alternate routes and remember that all scheduled work is weather dependent.
