PHILADELPHIA, PA — I-95 drivers should prepare for two weeks of overnight lane closures and ramp disruptions near Allegheny Avenue as crews ready a new traffic pattern that will move northbound traffic into the median for approximately two years.

The restrictions begin Monday, Sept. 28, with a left-lane closure on southbound I-95 between the Betsy Ross Bridge and Allegheny Avenue interchanges from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
From Tuesday, Sept. 29, through Friday, Oct. 2, northbound I-95 will have overnight lane closures between the Allegheny Avenue and Betsy Ross Bridge interchanges during the same hours.
The Castor Avenue ramp to northbound I-95 also will close overnight Tuesday through Friday. Drivers on Castor Avenue will be detoured north on Aramingo Avenue, then left onto Adams Avenue to reach the northbound I-95 entrance at the Betsy Ross Bridge Interchange.
Drivers approaching from Delaware Avenue will be directed east on Venango Street, right onto Balfour Avenue, left onto Castor Avenue, north on Aramingo Avenue and left onto Adams Avenue to access northbound I-95 at the Betsy Ross Bridge Interchange.
Another round of restrictions is planned Monday, Oct. 5, through Friday, Oct. 9. Northbound and southbound I-95 will have overnight lane closures between Allegheny Avenue and the Betsy Ross Bridge as crews complete the traffic shift.
PennDOT expects the new configuration to be in place by Oct. 10. Three northbound I-95 lanes will shift into the median for approximately two years, allowing crews to reconstruct the existing northbound highway and bridges between Tioga Street and Wheatsheaf Lane. Four southbound lanes will remain open through the work zone during this phase.
The work is part of the $311 million I-95/AF3 project, which will reconstruct and widen 1.3 miles of I-95 in both directions between Tioga Street and Wheatsheaf Lane.
Drivers should plan extra time, expect possible backups and remain alert for changing traffic patterns. All scheduled work is weather dependent.
