PHILADELPHIA, PA — Drivers should prepare for significant overnight delays on Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) next week as Market Street Bridge demolition closes and detours either the eastbound or westbound highway between the I-676 and 30th Street interchanges.

PennDOT will close either eastbound or westbound I-76 each night, with the direction determined by the progress of demolition work and events at the Sports Complex in South Philadelphia. The schedule is weather dependent.
When eastbound I-76 is closed, drivers will exit at Arch Street/30th Street, turn left onto Chestnut Street and then right onto Schuylkill Avenue before using the Walnut Street ramp to return to eastbound I-76.
When westbound I-76 is closed, drivers will exit at Walnut Street and follow Schuylkill Avenue to reach the ramps for I-76 and I-676.
Significant backups and delays are expected along the detour routes and near the work zone. Drivers should plan extra time and consider alternate routes, particularly during nights when traffic from South Philadelphia events could add pressure to the expressway.
The demolition is part of PennDOT’s $148.9 million project to rehabilitate and replace Market Street bridges spanning Amtrak and I-76, the Schuylkill River, the Schuylkill River Trail and CSX Railroad in Center City.
The Market Street Bridge over the Schuylkill River remains closed for an approximately 14-month rehabilitation. PennDOT is also replacing the bridge over Amtrak and I-76, repairing and redecking the river crossing, and replacing the bridge over the Schuylkill River Trail and CSX Railroad.
