DENVER, PA — Morphy Auctions is set to host its highly anticipated Premier Coins Auction on May 19, featuring an extraordinary single-consignor collection valued at an estimated $3 million. This landmark 187-lot event includes rare and historically significant items, from exquisite Morgan Silver Dollars to an unparalleled selection of Mormon gold coins. Most remarkably for collectors, all lots will be offered with no reserve.
Among the standout highlights is a stunning Kellogg & Humbert gold bar weighing 48.70 ounces. Embossed with the assayers’ signature markings, “No. 491, 871 FINE,” and valued at $120,000 to $160,000, this artifact carries historical weight as a relic of California’s Gold Rush era.
The auction also boasts an impressive array of Morgan Silver Dollars, including an 1893-CC Morgan Dollar graded PCGS MS65 from the Carson City Mint’s final year of operation. This coin is expected to command between $60,000 and $90,000. An 1879-CC “Capped Die” Morgan Dollar (PCGS MS65+ and CAC-certified), one of only 19 in this condition, is anticipated to fetch $30,000 to $50,000. Another top draw is an 1895 Morgan Silver Dollar graded PCGS PR63+CAM, estimated at $40,000 to $60,000.
Adding to the collection’s allure is the largest offering of privately issued Mormon gold coins to appear at public auction. These rare pieces, minted in Salt Lake City between 1848 and 1860, include an 1850 Mormon $5 gold coin (NGC AU55+) inscribed with religious iconography, estimated at $40,000 to $60,000, and an 1860 Mormon $5 coin graded PCGS AU53, valued in the same range. These unique coins are steeped in history, representing a pivotal period of self-reliance for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
“This auction offers collectors a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire coins of extraordinary historical and monetary value,” said a Morphy Auctions representative. “Each of these pieces tells a story, whether it hails from the Carson City Mint, the Gold Rush, or the Mormon frontier.”
The entirety of the auction collection, including high-grade coins from the San Francisco Mint and deeply sought-after gold proof coins, underscores the diversity and significance of the numismatic treasures on offer.
For avid collectors and investors, this no-reserve auction represents more than just an opportunity to bid; it showcases the vibrant market for rare coins and the enduring fascination with history preserved in precious metal.
