PHILADELPHIA, PA — This summer, working as a lifeguard at a Philadelphia city pool could be the coolest and one of the best-paying jobs for teens in Philadelphia. The city’s Parks & Recreation Department is offering free training for aspiring lifeguards, with starting pay set at $16 per hour, potentially reaching up to $18 per hour.

Additionally, the highly anticipated $1,000 end-of-season bonus is back. Qualified candidates who submit their completed employment application by April 15, 2024, and work through the 2024 summer season, are eligible for this generous bonus. Not ready to commit in April? Not a problem. Candidates who apply by May 15, 2024, can still earn an end-of-season bonus of $500.

The role of a lifeguard is pivotal to ensuring safety and enjoyment at our city pools. Lifeguards come from all walks of life, including teens, college students, teachers, and retirees. It’s a role that requires responsibility, alertness, and a caring attitude. Many of our lifeguards grew up in the neighborhoods where they work, returning each summer to give back to their communities.

One of the unique aspects of being a city pool lifeguard is that unlike other city jobs, you are not required to live in Philadelphia. This opportunity is open to all who meet the qualifications and are committed to ensuring safety at the pools.

Becoming a lifeguard requires passing a swim screening, which includes swimming 300 yards non-stop, treading water for two minutes without using arms, and retrieving a 10-lb brick from a 12-foot-deep well before swimming 20 yards back to the starting point with the brick, using only legs. Free training is provided to help master these skills and prepare for the Red Cross lifeguard certification course.

The Red Cross certification, required for most lifeguarding jobs, is valid for two years and is free for applicants aged 16-24 who commit to working at a city pool. For other candidates, the full certification costs $175, and recertification after two years costs $110.

To get started on this exciting summer job, reserve a time slot for a Lifeguard Swim Skills Training. The Parks & Rec’s Water Safety Instructors supervise these sessions, helping prepare you for the required Red Cross lifeguard certification.  Book your spot for Lifeguard Swim Skills Training here.

This summer job opportunity offers not just good pay, but also the chance to gain vital skills, serve the community, and enjoy a fun, rewarding work environment. Don’t miss out on making a splash this summer! Apply today and dive into an unforgettable summer experience.
