PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that barrier removal operations will occur at night next week on westbound Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) under a $36.8 million project to resurface and repair nearly five miles of the interstate, the associated on-and-off ramps, and 23 bridges from U.S. 1 (City Avenue) to Interstate 676 (Vine Street Expressway) in Philadelphia.
On Sunday, November 12, from 9:00 PM to 4:00 AM the following morning, lane closures will be in place on westbound I-76 between the Montgomery Drive and U.S. 1 North (Roosevelt Expressway) interchanges.
Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because significant backups and delays will occur. The work times next week will be adjusted as needed to accommodate motorists traveling to-and-from the Sports Complex in South Philadelphia.
Under this contract, PennDOT will mill and overlay I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) pavement in both directions; perform concrete base, shoulder and barrier repair and replacement as needed; construct minor grade adjustments for existing inlets at select locations; replace damaged signs; install new pavement markings, delineators and rumble strips; and perform bridge repairs.
H&K Group, Inc. of Skippack, PA, is the general contractor on this project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. Work on the entire project is expected to finish in late 2024.
