HARRISBURG, PA — The State Library of Pennsylvania, a beacon of knowledge housed within the historic Forum Building, marked its grand reopening this Friday, following extensive renovations. Secretary of Education Dr. Khalid N. Mumin heralded the return to the library’s original location, emphasizing the significant upgrades that have been made to the building’s infrastructure, including new electrical, heating, and cooling systems, as well as meticulous restorations to its historic interiors and façade.

The State Library, which has served the informational needs of government employees and the public alike, boasts an impressive array of services and collections. It houses the largest collection of Pennsylvania newspapers and books, alongside rare collections, genealogy materials, a dedicated law library, and a STEM Lab. This wide-ranging arsenal of resources underscores the library’s comprehensive approach to catering to diverse research needs.

Originating in 1745, when Benjamin Franklin was tasked by the General Assembly to order law references and maps, the State Library has since evolved into one of the foremost repositories of materials related to Pennsylvania. It stands as a testament to the state’s commitment to preserving and providing access to a wealth of information and historical records.

Deputy Secretary for the Office of Commonwealth Libraries and State Librarian Susan Banks expressed excitement over the restoration of operations in this cherished space. Banks highlighted the blend of tradition and innovation that characterizes the Library’s approach, noting the dedication to expanding and adapting collections and services to meet the changing needs of its users.

The State Library of Pennsylvania functions as a pivotal statewide resource center and law library, offering residents access to a vast array of print and digitized collections, online reference services, and automated resources. Its status as a central hub for Pennsylvania State and U.S. Government Documents is complemented by the capability for rapid access to other state and national collections through online systems, networks, and databases.

Among the treasures held within its walls is the Rare Collections Library, featuring the Provincial Assembly Collection—a treasure trove of rare colonial imprints—and the world’s largest collection of Pennsylvania newspapers. These invaluable resources provide unique insights into the state’s history and heritage, serving as vital tools for researchers, historians, and the general public.

The reopening of the State Library in the Forum Building not only restores access to a critical state asset but also rejuvenates a historic site with modern amenities. It represents a bridge between Pennsylvania’s rich past and its future, ensuring that the library remains a vibrant center for learning, research, and community engagement for generations to come.
