HARRISBURG, PA — As tax season swings into full gear, AARP Pennsylvania is advising taxpayers to file their returns early and be wary of fraudulent tax preparers. The group is emphasizing the importance of protecting personal data from identity thieves and dishonest tax professionals.

“Delaying tax filing can make you an easy target for identity theft, and entrusting your tax preparation to an unscrupulous individual could have serious financial and legal consequences,” warns Mary Bach, Volunteer and Chair of the Consumer Issues Task Force at AARP Pennsylvania.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued warnings about so-called “ghost” preparers. These individuals lack the required legal credentials and often leave their clients susceptible to inaccuracies and fraud. They typically promise inflated refunds and charge fees based on the refund amount. Some may even resort to deceptive tactics such as inventing income or claiming false deductions.

David Kalinoski, AARP Associate State Director of Community Outreach, underscores the importance of due diligence when selecting a tax preparer. “Ensure your tax professional has an IRS-issued identification and ask about their data security practices. Remember, you are ultimately responsible for the information on your tax return, regardless of who prepares it.”

To guard against tax preparation fraud, AARP Pennsylvania suggests:

  • Verifying the tax preparer’s credentials and professional standing,
  • Being cautious of preparers promising unusually high refunds,
  • Ensuring the tax preparer signs your return and includes their identification number,
  • Thoroughly review your tax return before signing.

The group also encourages taxpayers to take advantage of the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program, which offers free tax preparation assistance from trained and IRS-certified volunteers.
