PARKESBURG, PA — Flash flooding from heavy rain submerged two vehicles on South Culvert Street in Parkesburg Thursday evening, prompting police officers to enter the water and rescue three people as severe flooding created an immediate public-safety hazard.
Parkesburg police and the Keystone Valley Fire Department were dispatched to the unit block of South Culvert Street at about 5:33 p.m. after reports that two vehicles were submerged.
Police officers entered the floodwater and removed three occupants from the vehicles, according to the department.
Two of those rescued were elderly and received medical attention or treatment from Keystone Valley Fire Department personnel. Police checked both vehicles and found no additional occupants.
The flooding developed during heavy active rain and severely inundated the area around South Culvert Street.
The National Weather Service also received reports of multiple water rescues in Parkesburg, with floodwater reportedly reaching vehicle windows.
The incident underscores the danger posed by sudden flooding in western Chester County, where rapidly rising water can make road conditions hazardous with little warning.
South Culvert Street was closed following the rescue operation.
